A Common Thread: Joyce Hu, Wildlife Works

This fall, Indigo Handloom introduces A Common Thread - a series of interviews with women from diverse backgrounds that are connected by compassion and their drive to contribute to social good.

Today we meet Joyce Hu, Creative Director at Wildlife Works, the world’s only carbon neutral, fair trade factory that protects wildlife.

What are you most passionate about changing or enhancing in the world?

I want to motivate as many people as I can to live and consume more consciously - buy less, use longer.

What motivates your drive for social good?

Seeing the impact of consumer behavior has motivated me directly on the ground at Wildlife Works. When an individual decides to offset his/her footprint with us or buys a Wildlife Works product, it sustains the jobs at our project site. Each job we sustain is one less person cutting down trees or poaching our wildlife in Kenya.

"I want to motivate as many people as I can to live and consume more consciously - buy less, use longer."

What has been your biggest challenge or highest hurdle?

Getting more people and companies to buy our products! But the tides are changing. More and more people care about producing and buying ethically.

What are three words that best describe the "common thread" that exists in your life?

Love, love and more love! It’s a daily practice to ask how you can conduct every action from a place of love, not fear. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes I get it wrong. When I get it right, it always feels better because I feel more connected through that common thread.

"When I need to clear my head, I walk in the mountains or at the beach. That relationship to nature is such an important reminder to me that we are all connected."

Describe your own personal 'sanctuary'. Where is it? What is it like?

My home is my sanctuary. My husband and I spend most of our time at home so it is a priority to make it the most peaceful place for us. We meditate in our home every day and it feels like that helps to cleanse our space. When I need to clear my head, I walk in the mountains or at the beach. That relationship to nature is such an important reminder to me that we are all connected.
